Follow the directions below to prepare your water softener brine tank for cleaning and for safe disposal of the used brine.
Cleaning brine tank on water softener.
At the bottom of the tank you ll find a salt plate.
Remove and clean this as well.
Stir carefully and let the solution sit for 15 minutes.
Note that the volume of resin in the tank is always less than the total physical volume of the tank itself.
Clean your brine tank once a year.
To clean the brine tank first lift out the brine valve.
Remove the brine valve chamber.
Finally reassemble the system and pour 5 gallons of water in the brine or salt tank.
How to clean a water softener brine tank.
Once every few months pour water softener cleaner into the brine tank and set the system to regenerate to keep it clean.
Pour it into the water softener and scrub once more with a brush.
Due to the amount of silt and dirt involved with the inside of your softener you may want to take it outside or to a drain tub.
Add bleach to the brine tank.
Before you start cleaning make sure the salt levels are at the minimum level.
Once finished remove the water.
You can also prevent common brine tank complications by regularly cleaning your tank.
Bleach dosage to sanitize a water softener use 1 2 fluid ounces a bit over 2 tablespoons of bleach per cubic foot of resin in the resin tank.
About once a year empty your water tank and scrub it with soapy water.
Use a sponge or soft bristle brush to wash it all over the inside of the tank.
Dump the bleach water and rinse using a lot of clean water.
You should also unplug the softener and disconnect the tank.
Step 1 plan ahead for cleaning.
Then rinse it out and soak the tank in cup household bleach and 2 gallons of water.
Add water softening salt to the tank a 100 pound bag of salt is recommended.
Here is the best way to clean your tank.
Unscrew the bolts on either side of the salt tank.
Step 4 add a new bucket of clean warm water to the tank along with a generous amount of dish soap.
Lastly add water softener salt to the brine tank at least two 50 lb bags we recommend keeping the brine tank at least one quarter full of water softener salt at all times.
Shut off the water to the water softener.
For best results don t fill salt to the very top of the brine tank but leave six inches of space from the top rim of the tank.
You may need to wait a few days for the salt levels to drop.
Using the bypass valve located on top of your water softener shut off the incoming water to the softener and the brine tank.
Now use a sponge or soft bristle brush and completely wipe down the entire interior of the tank.
